For many graduates, the transition from university to the workforce can feel overwhelming. For Canadian teacher Tatum, it also came with the opportunity to start fresh in an entirely new country and that decision has turned into one of the best adventures of her life.
Tatum first connected with Prospero at a career fair at her university. It was there she learned about the chance to move abroad and begin her teaching career in Australia. What started as a passing conversation soon became a life-changing decision.
Like many first-time job seekers moving overseas, Tatum had endless questions from the big details down to the small ones. “My consultants were with me every step of the way,” she recalls. “No matter the time of day, they were there to work through it all and make me feel supported in every part of my journey.”
With Prospero’s guidance, Tatum secured her dream position in Queensland. “My new job is exactly what I was looking for. I now work at an amazing school that aligns with my values, and I’ve built some wonderful relationships. I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity to come along.”
Relocating to Australia wasn’t without its challenges, but Prospero was there to guide Tatum through the practical steps. “I wouldn’t have known about many of the things I needed if it weren’t for my consultant, Luisa,” she explains. “They gave me insight into the relocation process, advice on housing, and resources to help me settle into my new life.”
Though finding a rental was tricky and adjusting to being far from family and friends was tough at times, Tatum felt prepared and supported throughout. “With the help of my co workers and my consultants at Prospero, I truly felt like I could handle anything that came my way.”
For Tatum, the highlight of teaching in Australia has been the people. “I get to live in a beautiful city, meet incredible co-workers and students, and learn something new every day. Each day feels like an opportunity to explore, grow, and build friendships.”
Tatum has one piece of advice for anyone weighing up the idea of teaching abroad: just do it. “It’s terrifying at the beginning and leaving home can be one of the hardest things you’ve ever done, but moving abroad truly changes you in such amazing ways. The growth you gain from an experience like this can’t be compared to the comfort of home.”
