We are working with a supportive Victorian Government specialist school in the Latrobe Valley, Gippsland, seeking a dedicated Literacy Generalist Teacher to join their team from January 2027.

This is an excellent opportunity for a teacher with an English or literacy background, particularly someone with an interest or experience in phonological awareness, phonics and evidence-based literacy programs, including Heggerty and MultiLit.

You will have the opportunity to use your literacy expertise within an individualised specialist-school environment, supporting students to develop their literacy, communication, confidence and independence.

The Role

As a Literacy Generalist Teacher, you will:

  • Develop and deliver individualised learning programs.
  • Plan and deliver differentiated learning experiences.
  • Support students across literacy, numeracy and functional learning.
  • Develop students' reading, spelling, phonics and broader literacy skills.
  • Use evidence-based literacy approaches to support student progress.
  • Apply knowledge of phonological awareness to support literacy development.
  • Deliver and support structured phonics programs, including Heggerty and MultiLit.
  • Monitor and assess student literacy development.
  • Develop students' communication and social skills.
  • Support students to develop greater independence.
  • Implement positive behaviour support strategies.
  • Create a safe, structured and engaging learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with Education Support staff.
  • Work alongside allied-health professionals.
  • Build strong relationships with students and families.
  • Support community-based learning and real-world experiences.
  • Contribute to transition and future pathway planning.
  • Monitor and celebrate individual student progress.

About You

We are looking for a teacher who is:

  • Qualified and eligible for VIT registration.
  • Experienced in English, literacy or generalist teaching.
  • Passionate about literacy development and inclusive practice.
  • Interested in phonological awareness and evidence-based literacy intervention.
  • Experienced with, or keen to develop expertise in, Heggerty and MultiLit phonics programs.
  • Skilled in differentiation and individualised learning.
  • Positive, patient and relationship-focused.
  • Strong at building relationships with students.
  • Committed to seeing the potential in every student.
  • A collaborative team member.
  • Adaptable and confident working within a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Interested in developing students' literacy, communication, independence and life skills.
  • Excited by the opportunity to work within a specialist-school environment.

Specialist-school experience is highly regarded but is not essential.

Teachers coming from mainstream settings, particularly those with an English, literacy, primary or generalist teaching background, who are passionate about supporting students with additional learning needs are encouraged to apply.
