About the Role

Prospero Teaching is proud to be working in partnership with a large and established P–12 specialist school in Melbourne's north, supporting students aged 5–18 with moderate to profound intellectual disability, alongside autism, developmental delay and sensory, physical and complex additional needs.

The school is seeking a passionate Secondary Special Education Teacher to join their team from January 2027.

This is an excellent opportunity for a secondary teacher who is passionate about making a genuine difference to young people with additional needs and wants to work in an environment where individual progress, communication, independence and wellbeing are at the heart of education.

You will work within highly individualised learning programs, supporting students to develop academic, functional and life skills appropriate to their individual abilities and goals.

Teachers work closely with Education Support staff, families and allied-health professionals, including Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists, to provide a consistent and holistic approach to student learning and development.

The successful teacher will understand that progress looks different for every student and will take genuine pride in celebrating meaningful individual achievements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver highly individualised learning programs

  • Adapt curriculum and learning experiences to meet a wide range of abilities and needs

  • Support students across academic, functional and life-skills programs

  • Develop literacy, numeracy and communication skills at an individualised level

  • Use visual supports, structured teaching and alternative communication strategies where appropriate

  • Support students with autism, intellectual disability, sensory needs and complex learning needs

  • Implement positive behaviour support and proactive regulation strategies

  • Create calm, predictable and engaging learning environments

  • Work collaboratively with Education Support staff

  • Collaborate with Speech Pathologists, OTs, Physiotherapists and other professionals

  • Build strong relationships with students, families and the wider school community

  • Support students to develop independence, self-management and decision-making skills

  • Provide opportunities for students to participate meaningfully in their school and wider community

  • Contribute to transition and post-school planning

  • Monitor and celebrate individual student progress

About You

We are looking for a Secondary Teacher who is:

  • VIT registered or eligible for VIT registration

  • Passionate about Special Education and inclusive practice

  • Experienced in, or genuinely interested in, working with students with intellectual disability and/or autism

  • Confident differentiating learning for students with highly diverse needs

  • Patient, calm, nurturing and adaptable

  • Comfortable working in a hands-on specialist environment

  • Strong at building positive relationships with students

  • Confident working collaboratively with Education Support staff

  • Open to working as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Committed to developing student communication, independence and wellbeing

  • Able to recognise and celebrate small but meaningful steps in student progress

Experience in a specialist school is highly regarded but is not essential.

This opportunity may also suit a mainstream Secondary Teacher looking to transition into Special Education and develop their specialist practice.
